In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
